  • Founded 1823, Sonoma, California. The youngest and northernmost of the missions, and Spanish outpost against the Russians, Sonoma was the first to receive the protection of the United States since at its door American colonists staged the Bear Flag Rebellion. It is today a State Historical Monument and museum.
