Lithograph of John Albert Broadus. 1881. On January 24, 1827, John Albert Broadus was born in Culpeper County, Virginia. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1850, and became professor there the following year. He also was pastor of the Baptist church at Charlottesville. In 1855, he took two years off to be the university chaplain, after which he resumed his pastorship. Broadus was elected professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1859. He was a missionary in Gen. Robert E. Lee’s army in 1863. Until 1865, Broadus was the secretary of the Sunday School Board for the Southern Baptist Convention. He published many small works, and also Preparation and Delivery of Sermons, which became a textbook in Europe and America. Broadus died on March 16, 1895. JPG file (326 KB)
