Samuel Tarrant of Old Jonesboro, the first permanent pioneer settlement in Jones Valley (Birmingham Valley). Tarrant established the town's first mercantile. In 1862, Tarrant raised the Jonesboro Guards that mustered at Shelby Springs as Company H of the 28th Alabama Infantry Regiment. He also served as president of the Salem Male and Female Academy.
