Thomas Wats, fully clothed and with his hands clasped in prayer, stands chained at the waist to a stake. He is engulfed by flames and a black cloud hovers above him. A woman and several children, tears streaming down their faces, plead for his life. Wats is surrounded by a large crowd of soldiers; a civilian man is arguing with a soldier. In earlier editions, this martyrdom is illustrated by Luborsky and Ingram 11223/14, which appears in each of the second (1570), third (1576), and fourth (1583) early English editions. This illustration is a completely new design with some elements similar to Luborsky and Ingram 11223/64. JPEG file (439 KB).
