Description
  • Dumbrell preaches on salt and light based on Matthew 5:13-16. Christians are to function like a city upon a hill. Isaiah 2 speaks of Zion as the city based upon a hill as an end-time symbol. Isaiah 60 further refines this imagery, incorporating imagery of light. Zion is portrayed as the theological centre of the world by which the people of Zion will refract the will of God to the world. Light will go forth as a result of covenant renewal. Leviticus 2:13 and Exodus 30:35 associates salt with the covenant of God. Salt prefigures, typifies, and expresses the covenant of God. In the New Testament, salt is associated with the heavy claims described by Jesus concerning the cost of following Him (Luke 14:34-35 and Mark 9:49-52). In 2 Chronicles 13:5, David's covenant with God is referred to as a covenant of salt. Acting as salt, the Disciples will preserve society, giving it meaning. God's covenant is expressed through the Disciples. Like salt, Christians provide the stable and permanent elements within society. Through us, God's covenantal intentions and will is expressed. Christians must first be salt before acting as light to the world.
