Description
  • Picnic Excursion, from Bessemer headed for East Lake Park. The Caldwell House is behind the Engine and first cars. The three storied building to left of Caldwell house is across the street and on the west side of 22nd St. The fire which destroyed the Caldwell house started in this building and fanned by a strong wind from the west jumped across 22nd street and ignited the Caldwell, resulting in its destruction. The water pressure failed at the crucial moment and the center of Birmingham's social life went up in flames.
