• 20th Street. Camera facing north. Notice in the center of 20th Street beginning north of 2nd Avenue trolley, [there are] poles in the center of 20th [street] between the street car tracks. So many people got badly hurt by sticking their heads and arms outside the car that these poles and supports were removed. The Street Car shown in this photograph was one of Birmingham's first electric street cars (Nov 1891). The mule cars had been used on the short run and the dummy lines served the long runs. Highland Avenue- North Birmingham; Gate City- Pratt Ensley and two lines to Bessemer. The North Bessemer and Birmingham Powderly and Bessemer were the long lines. The electric cars first took over the mule lines and later the dummy lines.
