  • A soldier holds a halberd in his right hand and forces two bound men to burn their arms. The two men place their right forearms into a fire that emanates from a small furnace. The victims have their shirt sleeves rolled up, and a gathering of onlookers observes. (Cartouche: "Some thrust their ha[n]ds in the fire.78." ["Some thrust their hands in the fire. 78."]). This woodcut appears on the "Table of the Ten First Persecutions of the Primitive Church" foldout illustration in the second (1570) and fourth (1583) editions. Luborsky and Ingram 11223/1A (detail).
