Paul identified with the desires and concerns of Christ. As we share in the salvation offered through Christ, we will likewise experience the same sufferings of Jesus. Paul expressed this level of suffering through the stresses, pressures, and challenges experienced in ministry and shepherding the early Church. For Paul, his sole personal goal was to be found in Christ. Being found in Christ is a process of obedience and growing into the image of Christ’s likeness. Christ’s sufferings, trials, death, and resurrection were all patterns to be followed and experienced. Paul provides a pattern of imitation for the Philippians to follow in the humble attitude of Christ as He served others. Withycombe challenges listeners to avoid holding onto a cheap view of grace. Our faith in Christ is evidenced by our willingness to identify with Christ in sufferings and challenges.
