Description
  • Jack Shackelford (1790-1857) was a medical doctor, politician and solider, who played a key role in the Texas Revolution. With the outbreak of the Texas Revolution in October 1835, just a few months after this letter was written, Shackelford raised a unit in Courtland, Lawrence County, Alabama. The members of the unit wore red jeans and became known as the "Red Rovers" of Alabama. Shackelford was one of the few survivors of the Goliad massacre that took the lives of between 425-445 members of the Texian Army.
