  • Lithograph of Richard Furman. 1881. In 1755 Richard Furman was born in New York. While almost entirely educated at home, Furman became accomplished in Latin and knowledgeable in Greek and Hebrew. At 16, he was baptized; at 19 he was ordained pastor of the High Hills church. Furman spent part of the Revolutionary War in Virginia where he knew Patrick Henry. He was known as an important patriot and worked for religious freedom. After the war he returned to the church at High Hills. In 1787 he became pastor of the First Church in Charleston, where he remained the next 37 years. In 1814 he was unanimously elected as the first president of the Triennial Convention. Furman was numbered among those who formed the constitution for the state of South Carolina. He also served as president of the Baptist State Convention. Furman died in August of 1825.
