  • Harding preaches on the theme of pilgrimage based on Psalm 122. For the ancient Israelite, pilgrimage was an expectation 3 times a year during the Passover, the Festival of Weeks, and the Festival of Tabernacles. Psalms 120-124 are ascribed as 'Songs of Ascents,' most likely sung by pilgrims on their pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The Psalmist recalls the initial call of pilgrimage and their experience of the city. Jerusalem is seen as a place of arbitration/justice and the place of God. As God's dwelling place, God invites the Israelites to approach and encounter Him. The Old Testament portrays a future date in which the nations will make Jerusalem their capital and God as their king and ruler. For Peter in his first letter, Christians are likewise compared to foreigners and pilgrims. As followers of Jesus, we follow in His footsteps as pilgrims as we bear similar trials and tribulations.
