Ovey preaches on the value and significance of humanity based on Psalm 8. Without understanding what distinguishes humanity as special or significant, we cannot tell how to treat each other. Psalm 8 provides an outside perspective of mankind from the perspective of God. The greatness of God is expressed in creation and His kingship. God is capable of overcoming all opposition towards His rule. God deserves praise from all of creation. With such a great God, human beings are comparably weak, insignificant, and small. David's reaction to God's size is derived from his understanding of God and His qualities. David recognises God as generous and caring for humanity with and understanding of man's special role in ruling over the world. God has given us a dignified role for all of humanity. Consequently, our relationships are shaped by an understanding of man's inherent value and significance. God has given us this place in the world; our challenge is to recognise our place within the world and that it is given to us by God. God gives to us true self-knowledge and self-worth. Sin is a trip into self-deception and should be viewed as foolish. Our rule over creation appears fragmentary, problematic in light of the Fall. Psalm 8 is ultimately actualised and realised within Jesus - the true man. Through Jesus, humanity can accomplish the intended purpose and mission of man as portrayed in Psalm 8.
