Lithograph of Henry Jessey. 1881. Henry Jessey was born on September 3, 1601, in West Routon, Yorkshire, England. At 17 he entered St. John’s College in Cambridge, where he remained six years. Jessey then served as a chaplain for nine years in Assington, Suffolk. In 1627 he received Episcopal ordination, and in 1633 he became the rector of Aughton, Yorkshire. Beginning in 1637, Jessey pastored a Congregational church in London. After his baptism by immersion in 1645, he became pastor of the church at Swan Alley, Coleman Street, London. Until the Act of Uniformity forced Jessey from his position as rector at St. George’s, he served as a rector and a pastor of a Baptist church in the same city. Through his extensive knowledge of biblical languages, Jessey authored a revised translation of scripture, which remained unpublished. Shortly after being removed from his position of rector, Jessey was thrown in prison for his beliefs, where he died on September 4, 1663. JPG file (368 KB)
