Lithograph of John H. Cotton. 1881. John H. Cotton was born in Middletown, Connecticut, on August 20, 1778. He was married on May 30, 1802, after which he moved to New York state. In 1807 he moved to Vermont, where he lived the rest of his life. Cotton made a profession of religion on November 11, 1814. From 1814-1818 he served on the State Legislature and as town clerk from 1816-1820. He also served as associate judge of the County Court. In 1820, he became superintendent of the Vermont State Prison. Cotton was baptized on May 5, 1822 and joined the Baptist church in Windsor where he became a deacon and later senior deacon. From 1834 to 1843, Cotton served as the vice president of the American Baptist Home Mission Society. He died on May 1, 1850. JPG file (329 KB)
