  • Photograph of John Richard Sampey. 1917. John Richard Sampey was born on September 27, 1863, at Fort Deposit, Alabama. Three months after his birth, his family moved to Ramer. He entered Howard College at 16 and graduated at 18. Sampey was the youngest to ever graduate from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, at 21 years old. Following his graduation in 1885, Sampey received the dual honors of ordination at the Forks of Elkhorn Baptist Church and selection to be instructor in Hebrew, Greek, and Homiletics. Two years later he was made assistant professor. About this time he also received an honorary D.D. from Washington and Lee University. In 1892 Sampey was selected to succeed Basil Manly as Professor of Old Testament Interpretation. He later succeeded Dr. Broadus as the chairman of the Old Testament Lessons subcommittee of the International Lesson Committee. He died on August 18, 1946. JPG file (138 KB)
