Description
  • “The description of the burning of Iohn [John] Hus, contrary to the safe conduct granted unto him.” John Hus stands chained to a stake surrounded by stacked bundles of straw. According to the text surrounding the image, Hus’ hat is called a “Crown of Paper” and is being used to commit his soul unto the Devil. Three men on horses and others on foot flank Hus while one man lights the fire. One of the men on horseback offers him the safe-conduct paper that had been promised him if he would return to the Council of Constance (1415). The engraving is a revised and slightly reduced-in-scope design of the woodcut that appears in all early English editions (1563, 1570, 1576, and 1583). In the woodcut design, Hus appears to be chained to a stone wall rather than a stake. Revised design of Luborsky and Ingram 11222/8 and 11223/10. JPEG file (422 KB).
