Description
  • Hill preaches on the theme of living in community based on Philippians 2: 1-11. To live in a community produces unique challenges and obstacles. In face of opposition, Paul wants the Philippian church to live in unity. As Christians live in unity, we express the future experience of the unity and fellowship in heaven. Paul's primary concern is for the Philippians to live lives worthy of the gospel in unity. To live a life worthy of the gospel is marked by oneness and unity. Paul provides 4 reasons for unity. Firstly, Paul appeals to the Philippians that the comfort in Christ is our salvation. Secondly, Paul appeals to consolation of knowing Christ is completely committed to us in love. Thirdly, Paul appeals to the unity found through the Spirit. Finally, Paul appeals to the divine mercy and compassion experienced through the Cross. United, Paul wants the Philippians to have a united mind, and love or compassion like Christ. Love expressed like Christ is other- person centredness, marked by humility. The pattern of humility found in Christ is elaborated in verses 6-11. The attitude of true humility is expressed in the service of others. Humility is not claimed - expressed through actions. Jesus provides the ultimate example of humility. Dying and rising with Christ, one has a new pattern to follow (Christ). Divine equality for Christ meant sacrificial service and sacrifice.
