Description
  • Dumbrell speaks on Matthew 5:17–19. The passage represents a climax of the preceding teachings of chapter 5. Verses 21–48 continue to develop the themes expressed in verses 17–20. Matthew 10:34 uses a similar phrase to that found in 5:17; the verse speaks of the unexpected purpose of Jesus' ministry and gospel. Jesus is presented as a disappointer of popular expectations. Based upon Jesus' model, Dumbrell cautions listeners to be flexible in their expectations when they are involved in ministry. Jesus' declaration in Matthew 20:28 teaches that ministry involves service and humility rather than self-aggrandizement. In Luke 19:10, Jesus likewise disenchants popular expectations of Him and the type of people He was sent for. In Matthew 5:17–19, Jesus anticipates or addresses the assumptions of His listeners regarding what they have heard, or will hear, in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus emphasises a note of continuity between the Old Testament and His teachings.
