First Methodist Church "Mother of Methodism in Waco" 1850-1950
This tablet, erected March 12, 1950, commemorates the Centennial of the first religious organization in Waco, formed in 1850. In 1848 Rev. Joseph P. Sneed, Methodist Itinerant, preached the first sermon in a log cabin on the banks of the Brazos at the foot of Jackson Street. In 1850 he organized with 23 members, and built the first church in this community at 2nd and Franklin. Gen. Sam Houston spoke in the church built in 1858 at 3rd and Franklin. This present building is located less than one-half mile from the original church.
