John Noyes of Laxfield stands chained to the stake and burning. Noyes is bearded and fully clothed and appears to be making a shrugging motion with this arms and shoulders. Two men are in the forefront of the image--one on his knees appears to be tending the fire and adjusting a faggot and another man, who does not appear to be a soldier, is possibly pleading for Noyes’ life. The caption of the engraving disputes the year of this martyrdom and is unclear about whether it took place in 1556 or 1557. This depiction of Noyes' martyrdom is a new design for this edition; in earlier editions it is illustrated by Luborsky and Ingram 11223/18, which appears multiple times in the second (1570), third (1576), and fourth (1583) early English editions.
