Description
  • O'Brien preaches on the theme of holiness from John 17:13-19. The Christian faith teaches a different view of faith compared to other religions. Holiness in the highest sense is applied to God himself. The theme of holiness draws our attention towards God. Holiness also speaks of God's moral perfection and purity. Holiness is used in terms of people in regard to their relationship with God (as seen in Exodus 19 with the establishment of God's chosen people). John's Gospel speaks of the Trinity's holiness. In the high priestly prayer, Jesus sets Himself apart for the doing of the Father's will, akin to the consecration of a prophet. Doing the Father's will involves going to His death. Jesus dies for men to achieve what cannot be attained elsewhere. Jesus dies with a view of sanctifying His Disciples; their holiness is directly related to Jesus' death. In Hinduism, holiness is attained through personal action and achievement. Compared to this view, holiness and sanctification is actioned and achieved through the death of Jesus rather than personal action. The Disciples, like Jesus, are set apart by God, for the task before them as they take up their mission to others.
