Lithograph of Augustus Hopkins Strong. 1881. On August 3, 1836, Augustus H. Strong was born in Rochester, New York. He was converted and baptized in his junior year of college. After graduating from Yale College in 1857, he entered the Rochester Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1859. Following graduation Strong pursued studies at various German universities and traveled throughout Europe and the East. He was ordained pastor of the First Baptist Church of Haverhill, Massachusetts, in 1861. Four years later he became the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cleveland, Ohio, during which he received an honorary D.D. from Brown University. In 1872 he left Ohio to become president of the Rochester Theological Seminary and Professor of Theology. He died on November 29, 1921. JPG file (309 KB)
