1784 (recast early 19th century). In 1784, Wesley sat for Enoch Wood who crafted this bust of Staffordshire pottery. The artist claimed that Wesley had thought this likeness “much the best” that anyone had attempted. Adam Clarke also felt that this work bore a striking resemblance and was “the only proper likeness of that illustrious man.” The example was cast in the nineteenth century and bears the distortions of several generations of recasting.
