Webb speaks on John 3:22-26. The Jewish crowd harboured murderous intent toward Jesus because of His teachings about the Father and His actions on the Sabbath. The Lawkeepers sought to kill Him for violating the Law, particularly in the context of healing the paralysed man. Their anger arose from a strict interpretation of the Law rather than its true purpose as an act of mercy. In response, Jesus teaches that His work is closely linked with the Father’s, making His ministry the work of God and affirming His equality with God. The unbelief of the Lawkeepers reveals a failure to trust the very words of God they professed, as Jesus highlights these words as a central testimony pointing to Himself. Webb warns that it is possible to be knowledgeable in Scripture yet lack true belief in Christ. For theological students, a key danger is confusing knowledge of the Bible with knowledge of God and prioritising human opinion over God’s truth.
