Gilbert Tennent (1703-1764) was an Irish-American Presbyterian clergyman, and one of the leaders of the Great Awakening. Tennent begins this preparatory sermon concerning the wrath of God by citing Exodus 24:8, "And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words." He also references Chronicles and Jeremiah. From dates noted on the manuscript, it appears that Tennent wrote this speech in 1744, and delivered it again in 1746, 1749, 1750, and 1756.
