Description
  • CMS Summer School 1975. Griffiths speaks on Paul’s concern for the love of fellowship among believers from 1 Thessalonians 4:13–5:11. The love of Christians is to extend beyond the local church and denomination. Paul addresses two major issues related to the return of Jesus: the problem of death and the question of timing. The Thessalonians feared that those who had died would miss out on Christ’s coming. For the modern reader, it is important to remember that high mortality rates were a constant reality for the early Christians. Paul reminds believers that the funerals of Christians are to be viewed differently, since Jesus died the death so that His followers might experience a transformed death, which he likens to sleep. At His return, Jesus will bring with Him those who have died in Him. This message is to be proclaimed to a world without hope. Paul also stresses that the Day of the Lord will be unexpected and sudden. The relevance of Christ’s return is to comfort and encourage one another in suffering and to live a changed life in expectation of the event.
