"MD" (see "Soldiers drag two Christians by ropes" in this collection).
A naked man stands chained to a stake, and two soldiers gouge out the man's fingernails with knives. The man raises his right leg and gazes upward. The wounded toes of his left leg and his fingers on both hands spurt blood. The soldiers' shirt sleeves are rolled up. (Cartouche: "The Christians cruelly thrust under the nayles with sharpe prickes. 88." ["The Christians cruelly thrust under the nails with sharp pricks. 88."]). This woodcut appears on the "Table of the Ten First Persecutions of the Primitive Church" foldout illustration in the second (1570) and fourth (1583) editions. Luborsky and Ingram 11223/1A (detail).
