William Grant Broughton was born at Westminster on the 22nd May 1788, and died in 1853. He became the first Bishop of Australia and later Bishop of Sydney and Metropolitan of Australia. He studied at Pembroke College, Cambridge and was ordained in 1818. In 1828 he was appointed Archdeacon of New South Wales and sailed to Sydney with his wife Sarah in 1829 on the convict ship ‘John’. In 1836 he was appointed Bishop of Australia, and in 1847 became the first Bishop of Sydney. He died in Canterbury in 1853. This collection contains his extensive correspondence, personal papers and diaries.
