A large crowd observes the execution, which is about to occur in a town square. A friar addresses the crowd, some of whom gesture in alarm. Soldiers prepare the pyre, and a richly dressed man watches from horseback. This woodcut appears in the first through fourth editions (1563, 1570, 1576, and 1583). The man in the lower right corner of the image prepares to ignite the faggots with a torch; a richly-dressed man on horseback is portrayed in the lower left-hand corner of the image.
