He was politically active in many issues including socialism, communism, pacifism, the labor movement, and the American Civil Liberties Union. He was a prolific author of articles and poetry, contributing to liberal religious and labor journals. He was once arrested under the Criminal Syndicalism Act for participating in a pacifist assembly, and later worked to free labor activist Tom Mooney from prison. He served as editor of the CLC’s first periodical, The Lutheran Spokesman, from June 1958 until he was forced to resign in August 1970. He left the CLC in 1972 and finished his ministry in service to a congregation of the Missouri Synod in Indio, California. He also had a serious sense of humor.
