By the same scribe as Bodmer MSS 3 and 64 and Yale University, Beinecke 244.;Decoration: Faded red ornamenal uncial initial on fol. 1r; ornamental tailpiece in a black ink traced with a red ink (fol. 31r); initial letters in red and some casual swash "S" running patterns between sections of the text.;Title cataloged from existing description.;This interesting collection of unusual texts was at one time part of an anthology of classical and Byzantine Greek for the instruction of a student of the early post-Byzantine period. Plays by Aeschylus and Euripides also belonged to the same anthology. The longest item in the present volume (fol. 1-31) is a series of texts which range in length from 15 to 80 closely written lines of prose and which are concerned mostly with ethics (Drury's title for the volume was Anonymi Ethica) but also with mythology and philology. The glossator has written a title του̃ ̔υπάτου τω̃ν φιλοσόφων (transliterated: tou Hypatou tōn philosophōn) at the head of fol. 1. This is probably an attribution to the eleventh-century writer, Michael Psellus, who was known by various honorific titles, such as 'the highest philosopher'. The work, not likely by Psellus, is known to him in two other manuscripts: Paris: Bibl. Nat. Supplément gr. 58, fol. 40r-69v and Naples: Biblioteca Brancancciana IV.A.5, fol. 208v-228v (for the latter see Elpidio Mioni, Catalogo di manoscritti greci existenti nelle biblioteche italiene. [Rome] : Istituto Poligrafico dello Stato, Libreria dello Stato, [1964]). The remaining texts in the volume are a poem in 'political' verse on the Christian faith addessed by Psellus to the Emperor Michael Ducas (fol. 31v-32v; an abridged version of the poem printed in Migne) and the prose work on the Labors of Hercules by the fourteeth-century chartophylax of Bulgaria Joannes Pediasimus (fol. 34v-51v, with interlinear gloss and sections of continuous commentary).;Binding: Early nineteenth-century light brown morocco by Charles Lewis with the arms of Henry Drury, gilt on upper and lower covers with edges gilt.

Scribe I: with a red title and initials, Scribe I writes in a casual but legible hand with few ligatures. The hand is slightly squarish and slants to the right. There are few enlarged letters and a mixture of uncial and minuscules. It appears that the scribe used a quill of medium width. Scribe II: most of the manuscript was written by Scribe II. He writes a rather large formal open hand with abbreviations using superposition and compression primarily within the rubrics. The hand is uniformly broad and expansive, with some letters larger than others, and it is written with a reed pen with a largish soft nib. Scribe III: follows in much the same tradition of letter formation as that of Scribe II and with a slightly lighter brown ink for the text and a vivid red for the rubrics and the margin initials. However, his hand tends to be squarish and was likely written by a quill as can be seen by the variations between the thicks and thins. Scribe IV: writes a very scratchy, hasty, crabbed hand in a dark brown to black ink. It is highly abbreviated, slants to the right in the direction of the text. Scribe V: writes in a hand that has a slightly backward slant, is squarish, and the ink is purplish black. It appears to have been written by a hand that is more familiar with the roman alphabet than with the Greek, especially the uncial characters. Scribe VI: writes a hand very similar to that of Scribe IV. The hand is typical of that of an informal style and clearly comes from the early part of the sixteenth-century. Scribe VII: is very similar to that of Scribe IV, but with a strong rightward slant, in a strong black ink, hastily written. Almost certainly from the sixteenth- or early part of the seventeenth-century.;Decoration: Initials in red throughout; the larger ones have formal floral decoration or elaborate interlacing (fol. 8v, 12r, 16v, 17v, 20r, 22v, 23r, 26v, 30v, 33r, 36r, 37v--bird figure--41r, 45v, 49r, 53r--bar headpiece--54v, 64v and 76v). One includes the motifs of a bird (fol. 37v) with its neck wrapped around by a column to form the letter "K, " and on fol. 53r a bar headpiece.;Origin: Southern Italy.;Title cataloged from existing description.;Binding: Bound in dark brown blind-stamped morocco by Gozzi in Modena in 1970, sewn on four raised double cords. The binder's small identification stamp is in gild on the turn-in at the tail of the upper cover. The cover decoration is a wide frame with corner diagonals ruled in double fillets; along the inside of the lines forming the frame are a series of very small double annules. The central panel has a mascle with a rectilinear network divided into a pattern of diamons of 25 regular sections each centered with a small double outlined mascle with slightly concave sides. The doublures are of parchment and stamped on both the doublures inside the upper and lower covers in the gilt exlibris of "Torre del Palasciano, " an ovoid finely engraved leafmask with cresting elements; azured background of parallel lines.

He uses a wide nib which produces contrasting thick and thin lines as may be seen in the transverse strokes of the uncial kappa, lambda, chi, and alpha. Although the hand tends to be upright, there is a perceptible slant to the right. The titles, chapters and canon numbers are all written in semi-uncials, slightly largers than the letters of the text. The titles are frequently highlighted with a yellow wash. The scribe frequently fills in the outlines of a letter with deep red ink. Scribe II commences without loss of text at fol. 78r in the middle of a lesson for Palm Sunday.;Decoration: The titles and headings are highlighted in yellow. Some of the capitals are touched in red; there are more than 190 decorated initials of two main styles according to the taste of the scribes: 1) penwork ornament with foliate ornaments and knotted stems, pointing hands frequently infilled with red and sometimes yellow, and 2) simpler designs in red usually without the penwork outlines. There are headpieces which stretch across the full width of the column: fol. 1r, 117v, 123r, 127v, 133r, 138v, 140v, 142v, 143v (marginal foliate ornaments), 146v, 147v, and 150r. Some decorated initials are copied out again in margins in medieval hands and a standing figure holding a cross was added in margin on fol. 110v.;Title cataloged from existing description.;Gospel lectionary with readings for Sundays and for weekdays between Easter and Pentecost; part of flyleaf was replaced with another manuscript apparently an eleventh- or twelfth- century commentary on Genesis. Ornamental headpieces are provided for the Synaxarion, the Canon tables, and the opening of each of the Gospels.;Title cataloged from existing description.;Order of the books: Gospels, Acts, James, Pauline Epistles, General Epistles (except for James), Apocalypse. Eusebian section numbers, canon numbers in red in the margins; and marks such as the diplé are used in the margins to indicate Old Testament quotations. Letters of the alphabet are used as signes de renvoie as well as immense variety of free-form characters. Chapter headings and numbers appear in red throughout; lectionary citations appear in the margins. The chapter divisions are sometimes indicated with a red dot in the text with the number and respective kephalaia in the margin. Commentary on all books except the Apocalypse.;Binding: Contemporary Byzantine binding in second or third stage as evidenced by the oversewing of some of the quires. Textblock is sewn using the chain-link style of sewing; the boards are of soft wood covered in tanned leather with turn-ins at the head, fore edge, and tail; one triple interlaced clasp anchorage is preserved inside the back cover; two fore edge pins on front cover. Decoration formed with a triple fillet, divided into two rectangular panels, divided again by diagonals forming lozenges in panels which are filled with an equal armed cross composed of the quadri-partite fillet and lonzenge stamp with floral infilling; within the panels nearest the spine and the foreedge, centered, is a lozenge stamp (15 mm in diameter) with the Byzantine double-headed eagle; the entire perimeter of the cover has been formed with a pallet stamp.
