Date: 1761/1784 Contributing Institution: Christ Church, Philadelphia PA Description: These minutes begin with the establishment of the United Churches of Christ-Church and St. Peter's. This volume contains minutes from the Vestry meeting of July 4, 1776, when the Vestry resolved at the onset of the American Revolution: "Whereas the Honorable Continental Congress have resolved to declare the American Colonies to be free and independent States, In consequence of which it will be proper to omit those Petitions in the Liturgy wherein the King of Great Britain is prayed for, as inconsistent with the said Declaration. Therefore Resolved, that it appears to this Vestry to be necessary for the peace and well-being of the Churches to omit the said Petitions, and the Rector and Assistant Ministers of the United Churches are requested in the Name of the Vestry and their Constituents to omit such petitions as are above mentioned." Creator: Christ Church (Philadelphia, Pa.) and United Churches of Christ-Church and St. Peter's (Philadelphia, Pa.) Date: 1763/1810 Contributing Institution: Christ Church, Philadelphia PA Description: The church registers document all the baptisms, marriages and burials at Christ Church from 1709 to 1976. They also document the same for Saint Peter's and Saint James churches during affiliated years. The series houses some private registers, which were those maintained by individual rectors Archibald Cummings, William White and John Waller Jones. The private registers are not inclusive. The series is rounded out with an undated index to the registers and a book of communicants. Entries, depending on the event, include the name of the individual(s), sponsors or parents, presiding minister, date and church affiliation. Many of the volumes are marked as such: "Persons searching the records must pay 25 cents to the Sexton for every search." This 1763-1810 register is paginated in light pencil at the top right of each odd page. There are some errors in pagination. After page 65, there are three unnumbered pages, after which the numbering starts at 65 again.
