Among those pictured are: Phyllis Smith, 3rd from left, key volunteer on the switchboard; then John Pairman (Jock) Brown, resident theologian; and Richard York, minister, director and guiding force. He was politically active in many issues including socialism, communism, pacifism, the labor movement, and the American Civil Liberties Union. He was a prolific author of articles and poetry, contributing to liberal religious and labor journals. He was once arrested under the Criminal Syndicalism Act for participating in a pacifist assembly, and later worked to free labor activist Tom Mooney from prison.
