Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting Date: 1772/1790 Contributing Institution: Haverford College Quaker and Special Collections Description: A manumission was the legal document wherein an owner freed an enslaved person. As Quakers became convinced that the institution of slavery was contrary to their religious beliefs, they began to free their slaves.
