Photograph of Robert Taylor Hanks. 1923. On April 23, 1850, Robert Taylor Hanks was born in Olney, Alabama. At 21 he moved to Dalton, Georgia, to study law. There, however, he was licensed to preach and soon left for Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, then at Greenville, South Carolina. He took a short leave from the Seminary to learn languages at Richmond College. Finally he left the Seminary to pastor the Dalton church that had first licensed him. He remained there four years, after which he moved to Albany, Georgia, where he served as pastor for another four years. After this time he moved to Texas, where he pastored many churches over the next several years. The State Board elected him general missionary five times. He also started The Western Baptist and served as a trustee of several educational institutions. (page 189 of BB v. 1) JPG file (208 KB)
