  • Lithograph of Basil Manly. 1881. On January 25, 1798, Basil Manly was born in Chatham County, North Carolina. He was baptized on August 26, 1816 and licensed to preach in 1818. Manly graduated from the College of South Carolina in 1821 and was ordained the following year. He served as pastor at Edgefield Court-House, South Carolina. In 1826 he became pastor of the First Baptist Church at Charleston. After ten years, Manly was elected president of the State University of Alabama. In 1855 he returned to Charleston to be pastor of the Wentworth Street church. Four years later, he was called back to Alabama as state evangelist. Manly died on December 21, 1868. JPG file (324 KB)
