  • Lithograph of Isaac Backus. 1881. Isaac Backus was born on January 19, 1724 in Norwich, Connecticut. His conversion came in 1741 during the Great Awakening. He was ordained in a Separate church in Middleborough in 1748 where he served as pastor. He also served as an evangelist. In 1749 he married Susannah Mason of Rehoboth. Eventually Rev. Backus came to believe in baptism through a profession of faith. After his baptism by Elder Pierce of Rhode Island he was no longer accepted by his church. In 1756 he became pastor of a new Baptist church in Middleborough. He was a trustee of Brown University for 34 years beginning in 1765. Rev. Backus worked to further the civil rights of Baptists in Massachusetts. Beginning in 1774, he worked as the chosen agent of the Baptist churches of the Warren Association.
