  • Lithograph of James Huckins. 1923. In April of 1807, James Huckins was born in New Hampshire. At 14 he was baptized. He graduated at an early age from Brown University. Huckins was among the first Baptist ministers sent to Texas by the Home Mission Society. After many years as a missionary, Huckins became pastor of the church in Galveston. In 1859 he accepted the pastorate of the Wentworth Street Baptist church in Charleston, South Carolina. At the outbreak of war, Huckins continued his pastorate and also served as a chaplain until his death on August 14, 1863.
