Four martyrs-- John Bland, John Frankesh, Nicholas Sheterden, and Humfrey Middleton--are chained to two stakes. All four are fully clothed. A group of soldiers surrounds the burning martyrs and several soldiers tend the fire in the foreground of the image. In earlier editions this martyrdom is illustrated by Luborsky and Ingram 11223/37, which appears in each of the second (1570), third (1576), and fourth (1583) early English editions. This version is illustrated by a completely new design. JPEG file (369 KB).
