Thomas Bilney rests his left hand on an open book, presumably the Bible, that is on the table in front of him and puts a finger of his right hand in the flame of a long candle, possibly to prepare himself for martyrdom the next day. He is surrounded by a group of soldiers and the scene appears to be taking place in a prison. Heavily revised version of Luborsky and Ingram 11222/15 and 11223/44 in which Bilney is burning his finger alone in his cell and not in the presence of soldiers as in this 1684 engraving. The earlier woodcut appears in all four of the early English editions (1563, 1570, 1576, 1583). JPEG file (429 KB).
