Description
  • 100 plates illustrating sculptures and bas-reliefs discovered in the Assyrian ruins of Nimroud and Kouyunjik, and believed to be the remains fo the ancient city of Nineveh. The mounds containing them were on the eastern bank of the river Tigris, near the modern city of Mosul, and were excavated during the year 1846 and part of 1847. A detailed account of the origin of their discovery, with a general history of the excavations, is contained in a smaller work, entitled "Nineveh and its Remains," of which these Plates may, to some extent, be considered illustrations.
