Lithograph of William McMaster. 1881. In 1811 William McMaster was born in the County of Tyrone, Ireland. He was converted early in life and active in the local church. At the age of 22, he came to Canada. In 1862 he was elected to the upper house of the Canadian Legislature. In 1865 he received dual honors in being chosen as Senator of the Dominion and by being appointed member of the council of public education. McMaster was appointed member of the senate of Toronto University in 1873. He was instrumental in the formation of the Superannuated Ministers’ Society, of which he served as president from its inception. He entirely paid for the building of the Toronto Baptist College.
