Chained and consumed by flames, Rogers ("Lord receiue my spirite." ["Lord receive my spirit."]) points directly at a richly dressed man, who supervises the execution from horseback. Another man lights the fire, and a watching priest applauds. Protesters surround the execution scene and join a large crowd of spectators. Rogers was the first English Protestant to be burned for heresy during the reign of Queen Mary I (1553-58). During the 1530s, he adopted the pseudonym of "Thomas Matthew" in his editions of the English Bible in order to disguise his identity.
