Leading a prison Bible study, Smith sits on a stool and places his right hand on an open Bible. A man behind Smith folds his hands in prayer, while Smith instructs four others who share the cell with him. Among his audience, one holds an open Bible and one carries a Bible in his left hand. A fifth man leans his head on his hand. Mirror-reversed xylographic type identifies four of the individuals in this image: "R. Smith."; "I. Newman." ["J. Newman"]; "Simson."; and "Tankerf. G." ["George Tankerf[ield]."]. The carver of this woodblock worked directly from the layout of his model rather than in mirror image, which has resulted in the mirror reversal of the finished illustration. Martyrological verse, written in a clean, early modern italic hand, appears below the woodcut in the OSU copy of the 1563 edition (pictured here). This woodcut appears in the first through fourth editions (1563, 1570, 1576, and 1583). Luborsky and Ingram 11222/35, 11223/76. JPEG file (1.44 MB).
