Following his arrest, Thomas Cranmer ("L. Receiue my spirit" ["Lord receive my spirit"]) burns at the stake outside Oxford. Cranmer punishes his right hand in the fire because it had signed a statement that recanted his Protestant belief prior to his execution. A friar (identified xylographically as "Frier Iohn" ["Friar John"]) gestures at the worker who lights the pyre. A crowd of soldiers and civilians joins three richly dressed figures, seated at the right of the image, in observing the execution. This woodcut appears in the first through fourth editions (1563, 1570, 1576, and 1583). Luborsky and Ingram 11222/44, 11223/88. JPEG file (1.03 MB).
