  • Margaret Anna Smith arrived in Egypt in 1872. She led the founding of the Fowler Orphanage, and was also instrumental in the conversion from Islam of Ahmed Fahmy, which became a major incident due to the opposition of his family and the involvement of the Egyptian authorities. See Sharkey, pp. 78-79. Smith taught for many years and served as principal of the girls' school in Haret es-Sakkain.
