  • Lithograph of Jeremiah Bell Jeter. 1881. Jeremiah Bell Jeter was born in Bedford County, Virginia, on July 18, 1802. Immediately after his baptism in December of 1821, he began to preach. In 1823 Jeter helped organize the Baptist General Association of Virginia. On May 4, 1824, he was ordained to work at High Hills church in Sussex County. Jeter held various pastorships, beginning in 1826, until he became pastor of the First Baptist church in Richmond, Virginia, where he remained almost fourteen years. After a short time pastoring the Second Baptist church in St. Louis beginning in 1849, Jeter returned to Richmond in 1852 to pastor the Grace Street Baptist church. He also worked as senior editor and contributor to the Religious Herald. During his time in Richmond, Jeter authored many works. He died on February 18, 1880. JPG file (326 KB)
